Drew McIntyre defeated Goldberg in the opening match of Royal Rumble 2021 to retain his WWE Championship.
WWE Champion Drew McIntyre extended his Championship run with an impressive win over Goldberg in the opening match of Royal Rumble 2021. The match started with McIntyre hitting the WWE Hall of Famer with a head butt and a spear even before the referee rang the bell.
Goldberg was quick to return and speared McIntyre through the barricade outside the ring. The WWE Hall of Famer gained control over the match with 2 more spears and the jackhammer. But McIntyre kicked out.
The WWE Champion once again hit his finisher and retained the championship with a pinfall win. Following the match, McIntyre showed the utmost respect for Goldberg, who was highly expected to win the championship and then lose it at Wrestlemania 37.
McIntyre has only lost one match since becoming the WWE Champion and he looks all but set to walk into Wrestlemania as a two-time champion.
When did Goldberg return to challenge McIntyre?
After successfully retaining the title by defeating Keith Lee in the main event of the Raw Legends Night, McIntyre got the biggest surprise when Goldberg walked out in the final minutes of the show. The former Universal Champion then challenged McIntyre to a match at Royal Rumble.
McIntyre accepted the challenge a week later but couldn’t appear on Raw as he tested positive for COVID-19. The duo had a faceoff on the final Raw ahead of Royal Rumble 2021 last week.
Given Goldberg’s history of winning the WWE titles before Wrestlemania, he was favourite to defeat McIntyre but that didn’t happen. He is expected to take another break before returning to in-ring action on the road to Wrestlemania 37.
