Samoa Joe Explains How Wrestlers Should Work A Match With Brock Lesnar

Several months after he debuted on WWE’s main roster, Samoa Joe entered a feud with Brock Lesnar in the summer of 2017. The former NXT Champion, simply put, turned out to be one of Lesnar’s toughest and most entertaining opponents.

Samoa Joe officially joined the main WWE roster on the Jan. 30, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw. He was pushed to the top of the card in relatively short time, earning a Universal Championship match against Lesnar at the Great Balls of Fire pay-per-view on July 9. The former wound up defeating Joe via pinfall in the main event to retain his title.

During an interview on Out of Character with Ryan Satin (h/t, Samoa Joe explained what other wrestlers need to focus on when it comes to working with Lesnar. Most notably, he emphasized the importance of making it seem like there’s legitimate tension with the former WWE Champion.

“That’s the kind of energy you’ve got to have when you’re out there with Brock,” Samoa Joe said. “He probably won’t respect anything less than that. If you don’t show up saying you’re going to try and kick his teeth in and you’re coming after him, he ain’t trying to hear it. You’ve got to keep that energy with him. That’s kind of what I’m alluding to. You’ve got to match that intensity. You can’t walk into this kind of half (expletive) and going ‘oh I hope this works out. How are you sir? Can’t wait to get out there and get after it.’ You’ve got to just go get it. Brock has no qualms about getting into it with anybody. It makes for a nice combination.”

Samoa Joe received another title opportunity against Lesnar at SummerSlam 2017. The two competed in a fatal four-way match for the Universal title, along with Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns. Once again, Lesnar was able to retain the championship after pinning Reigns.

To date, this marks the most recent match between Joe and Lesnar. The former was released from his WWE contract as part of budget cuts back in April, but WWE wound up bringing Joe back for an NXT role, and he returned to company programming two weeks ago.

Could We See Samoa Joe Vs. Brock Lesnar Again?
Prior to his April release, WWE had used Samoa Joe as a Raw commentator. It’s difficult to imagine him being retired from in-ring competition, but it remains to be seen how WWE will use Samoa Joe.

Lesnar has been absent from WWE programming for over a year now, and chances are he won’t feud with Joe following his return. Most likely, WWE will pit him against other main event stars. It’s hard to predict the future, but given the circumstances, it’s hard to envision another Samoa Joe-Brock Lesnar match taking place, at least any time soon.
