John Cena was the face of WWE for nearly a decade, playing the good guy, who always preached ‘Hustle Loyalty and Respect. Cena’s popularity rose to incredible heights with this character, and he ended up becoming a 16-time World Champion, equaling the number with the legendary Ric Flair.

Before he was the lovable hero of millions of kids around the world, Cena was Doctor of Thuganomics, which was a cool rapper gimmick. He would do freestyle rap and take jibes at opponents while rapping. He portrayed the rapper gimmick for over two years, and he was popular among fans for being such a distinctive character. Cena continued this gimmick until WrestleMania 21, where he won the WWE Championship.

John Cena, then the United States Champion, humiliated Kenzo Suzuki in a rap battle a couple of weeks before this match. After failing to win the US Title, Suzuki ambushed Cena when he wrestled Rene Dupree in the Royal Rumble qualifying match. A title rematch took place between Cena and Suzuki on the SmackDown before Royal Rumble.

It was a squash match that lasted less than two minutes. Suzuki attacked Cena at the beginning, but the latter turned things around with a five-knuckle shuffle and FU to retain the belt.

Carlito made a huge statement by beating John Cena in his debut main roster match in 2004. The two men collided in a singles match once again on the SmackDown before WrestleMania 21.

The match was cut short after JBL showed up with cops. For vandalizing JBL’s limousine, Cena was handcuffed and got arrested. The WWE Champion even took Cena down with a cheap low blow. Meanwhile, Carlito was nowhere to be seen after JBL showed up during the match.

Perhaps the biggest match of Orlando Jordan’s career came on an episode of the blue brand when he received a title shot. As Cena was already confirmed to face JBL, he put his United States Championship on the line against Orlando Jordan.

It was an ordinary match with a lame finish due to multiple interferences. The Basham Brothers interrupted the bout and diverted the referee’s attention. Taking advantage of the distraction, JBL hit Cena, allowing Jordan to win the match as well as the United States Title.

After Cena’s emphatic performance at the Royal Rumble, he was put in the tournament. Cena faced Orlando Jordan in the first round of the tournament.

6John Cena & Big Show Vs JBL & Orlando Jordan (SmackDown, February 25, 2005)

On the SmackDown after No Way Out, JBL and Orlando Jordan assaulted John Cena. Consequently, Teddy Long announced that JBL and Jordan would take on Big Show and Cena in a Tag Team match because Big Show challenged JBL at No Way Out, while Cena was set to be his next challenger.

Cena and Big Show were the dominant team in this match. Cena won the match for his team by delivering a FU to Orlando Jordan.

5John Cena Vs Booker T (SmackDown February 17, 2005)


John Cena faced Booker T on SmackDown. It was a Semi-Final encounter for the number one contender divider match. Given their stupendous previous match at No Mercy 2004, it was expected to be a great encounter.

It was a physical match, and Booker T was impressive at the beginning of the bout. Cena, however, had the last laugh, and he won the match by pinning Booker T to reach the finals of the tournament.

With the intense build-up of the WWE Championship match on SmackDown, Cena teamed up with WWE Tag Team Champions, Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio. On the other hand, JBL and The Basham Brothers were their opponents.

It was a classic tag team match, as Cena and JBL, the WrestleMania 21 opponents also tussled in the ring. Rey Mysterio picked the win for his team. After the match, Cena was about to attack JBL with a steel chair, but he refrained or he would have squandered the title opportunity at WrestleMania 21.

Royal Rumble was the match that put a huge spotlight on John Cena because his performance was awe-inspiring. Cena entered at number 25 and lasted over 15 minutes, ending up as the runner-up of the match.

However, the ending of the match was controversial and certainly an unforgettable one. When Batista tried to Batista Bomb Cena, the latter dragged him towards the rope, and both men landed on the floor at the same time. There was a visible confusion, as one referee crowned Batista the winner, while the other one gave the victory to Cena. Vince McMahon had to interfere with the situation, and he restarted the match with Batista and Cena. When the match began again, Batista eliminated Cena to win the Royal Rumble match.

One of the biggest matches of John Cena’s career was at WrestleMania 21, where he challenged the WWE Champion, JBL. Followed by outstanding storytelling, Cena had all the momentum as a babyface.

From the start, JBL dominated the majority of the match. But Cena shifted the momentum after catching JBL from the top rope. After a Five Knuckle Shuffle and a FU, Cena won his first-ever WWE Championship on the Grandest Stage of Them All.

The final match of the #1 contenders tournament took place at No Way Out, which was the last stop before heading to the Showcase of Immortals. John Cena met Kurt Angle in a singles match. While the Olympic gold medalist beat Rey Mysterio to reach the final, Cena did the same against Booker T.

It was arguably the best match of the event. From a number of Suplexes, Angle Slam to various submissions, The Wrestling Machine tried everything in his arsenal, but Cena didn’t give up. In the end, Cena managed to hit an FU on Angle and won the match. With that victory, Cena punched his ticket for WrestleMania 21.
